Clay, love, discovery

Isabella Araujo is a sculptor, predominately working with clay. Her work amalgamates everything she's seen, heard, and experienced. Visually representing and exploring feelings, thoughts, and other things she doesn't quite understand. She loves stepping back to analyze the conversation a piece is having with her.

Isabella almost exclusively hand-builds her pieces, mostly building with coils. With no specific direction, she begins a sculpture, responding to the material as she works. Using minimal tools the marks of her fingers become the foremost texture. This texture is highlighted by the terra sigillata, which delicately coats the sculptures. To finish, she adorns her pieces with found objects including glass, rocks, flowers, and metal scraps. Through this process, she's developed a unique visual language filled with small, curated snapshots to large, sweeping, textured surfaces.

Isabella graduated with a BFA in Ceramics from Penn State in 2023. She has since been a co-op member at the Farmington Valley Arts Center. At school, she always found creative ways to expand her skillset, never limiting herself to one material or process. She also frequently works with oil paint, fabric, and yarn. Currently, she is based out of Connecticut.
